Acquires NAL Group CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, (March 2, 2020) – CRST International, Inc., one of the largest privately held transportation companies in the United States, today announced the acquisition of privately-held NAL Group,  headquartered in Edison, NJ. Privately-held NAL Group is an industry leading final mile logistics company, servicing the U.S. and Canada.  NAL Group specializes in warehousing services, home delivery of big and bulky consumer durables, complex in-home installation and assembly services, and express courier services.   NAL Group’s customers are predominately high-profile retailers, most notably delivering, installing and/or assembling items such as furniture, appliances, exercise equipment and electronics. The company services the United States and Canada.

Hugh Ekberg, President and CEO of CRST International said, “The acquisition of NAL Group complements CRST’s service offerings through expertise in final mile logistics and complex in-home installation and assembly services. CRST’s profitable growth has been built with the successful acquisition and integration of quality companies, and CRST is now one of the most diverse and complete transportation service providers in the industry. We are thrilled to be working with Matt Riordan at NAL Group, and his team on this acquisition as it will improve our capacity and capability in this strategic growth market segment and allow us to better serve our customers to accelerate our growth,” added Ekberg. Matt Riordan, previous President and CEO of NAL Group, will continue overseeing sales and operations.  Riordan stated, “The NAL Group team looks forward to joining the growing CRST International organization.  With NAL Group’s strong reputation and specialized service offerings, we are excited to offer our collective customers a wider range of services in more locations.” “NAL Group will allow CRST to enter the complex in-home installation and assembly market with existing customers as well as with an expanded customer base in the U.S. and Canada,” said Ekberg. “For CRST and NAL Group customers, it means new niche service offerings and scalable capacity not previously available. Bringing these two businesses together will deliver significant benefits to the combined customer base as well as provide rewarding career opportunities for all employees in the growing CRST enterprise.” The NAL Group acquisition fulfills a key element of the CRST strategic growth plan. In the past several years, CRST has acquired Specialized Transportation, Inc., Allied Special Products (the specialized division of North American Van Lines), BESL Transfer Company, Pegasus Transportation, and Gardner Trucking, Inc.

CRST Expedited Inc. Honors 17 Drivers for Safely Driving 1 Million-Plus Miles

November 05, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: CRST Media Relations Team (800) 736-2778 mediarequests@crst.com Gilbert Weekley, a 32-year veteran CRST driver, achieves 4 million miles of accident-free driving   CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – CRST Expedited Inc., the largest operating company of CRST International Inc., recently recognized an additional 17 drivers for completing at least 1 million accident-free miles. “I am proud to recognize these 17 men and women for their safety excellence,” said Cameron Holzer, president of CRST Expedited. “Senior leadership enjoyed the opportunity to meet with these million-milers, recognize their contributions and gain their direct insight on best practices in our safety-first culture.”

Gilbert Weekley of Paden City, West Virginia, has lived CRST’s safety-first mantra for the past 32 years and has reached a significant career milestone — driving more than 4 million miles without an accident. Weekley learned the professional driving trade from CRST, which has become one of the largest driver-training organizations in the truck transportation industry. He later became a driver trainer, instilling the same cautious attitude and by-the-book safety procedures in close to 150 student drivers over nearly a decade. “I loved helping people get started in truck driving,” said Weekley. “I always tell drivers to remember their comfort zone, keep your guard up and always stay one step ahead. And don’t forget to use a lot of common sense. If you can handle driving a truck, you can handle just about anything.” CRST Expedited has the largest number of team truck drivers in the industry, and some million-milers feel team driving helps them to be safer. "The dynamic is the team, not an individual,” said William Butler of Cordele, Georgia. “You know, treat the truck as a team effort. It's just safer. My co-driver and I, we mesh well enough that we can do anything together, on or off duty. We're family." In addition to meshing, it’s also important to have a co-driver who is flexible and willing to learn. “It's a forever-learning process,” said Matthew Hampton of Norwalk, Iowa. “I don't care if you've got 4 million miles, a million miles, or whether you've got 20 miles. Everybody learns from everybody.” Hampton also mentioned the added benefit of team driving is “you’re going to make more money” when two people are driving the truck all the time, versus having it sit somewhere for 10 hours, because “the miles stack up.” “There are more than 3.5 million professional truck drivers logging nearly 725 billion miles in the U.S. each year,” said Holzer. “Driving 1 million miles without an accident is a significant accomplishment. These men and women are the driving force behind CRST’s growth and success.” CRST Expedited Inc. Honors 17 Drivers for Safely Driving 1 Million-Plus MilesCRST International President and CEO Hugh Ekberg, COO Mike Gannon and their leadership team joined Holzer and 300 CRST Expedited team members at a reception for the million-mile honorees and their families at Theater Cedar Rapids (TCR) last month. Following the reception, John Smith, CRST owner and board chairman, joined the senior leadership team in presenting the award ceremony, which was followed by a private showing of “My Fair Lady.” CRST honorees who attended the award ceremony with senior leadership, pictured from left to right. Hugh Ekberg, current COO and Group President, will become President and CEO, effective October 1. Rusch will remain in a full-time advisory capacity to John Smith, Chairman of the Board for Admiralty Holdings and owner of the CRST International family of companies, until Dec. 31, and will remain on the CRST board of directors going forward. After being a special agent for the FBI, and 10 years of increasing responsibilities in operations and finance for North American Van Lines, Rusch joined CRST Malone as vice president of operations in 1991. In 1998, Rusch was appointed president and COO of CRST Van Expedited. According to Smith, Rusch turned the Expedited operating company into a streamlined, operationally efficient and profitable entity within a short timeframe, earning him additional responsibilities and promotions. Rusch was named president and CEO of CRST International in 2010, following Smith’s retirement from that role.

“Dave is one of the best operators in the industry and the master of negotiations,” said Smith. “He has acquired five trucking companies, significantly grew our revenue and charted the course for CRST to be debt-free again next year. Dave has brought CRST financial stability and operational excellence. We are most grateful to him for his 27 years of dedicated leadership to CRST, our employees and our customers. He’s an industry veteran who should be proud of his legacy, which includes positioning the company for continued growth and success.” Over the course of his career at CRST, Rusch has accomplished many milestones, most notably:
  • Successfully negotiating and crafting complex agreements to acquire the best transportation providers in niche markets, including Specialized Transportation Inc., the Special Products Division of Allied Van Lines, BESL Transfer Co., Pegasus Transportation Inc. and Gardner Trucking;
